The giddy dilemma facing the stylish woman, heading to the big city and knowing about Instagram and the terrible British weather.
Some women insist on heels no matter what. For them London brings to mind more black cabs and afternoon tea than traipsing through the underground wishing that you’d brought your slippers for the train ride home. But here’s the thing… looking cold or feeling cold whilst your feet sing the song of geishas in history is not cute. Or chic. Or even nice.
And we’re British. So we’re all about nice.
I was vaguely jealous when I saw a group of women boarding the train at 8.15am all hairspray and high heels. My hair eats hairspray. I have the legs of a 50s movie star and can take high heels. But I’m never in a group so if I take a prosecco induced tumble getting off the train at 11 am, there’s no one to set me back onto my shoes and help me up the ramp.
This time I was organised. I had three potential options. Two with sequins. One without. The BBC weather app had long since tired of my constantly refreshing: London, Sunday. I went to bed on Saturday having made my choice knowing that 5.30 am is not when my decision making skills are at their peak. But at 5.30am found my decision going out of the window and my body going head to, well not toe, but above the knee sequins.
Turns out you can wear sequins if Madame is wearing trainers. And those trainers happen to be Stella McCartney. And the sequins happen to be a £5 Zara sale dress.
Fortnum and Mason welcome you into their delightful bar for champagne and you don’t feel weird. You feel darn good.
Happy Birthday, Madame Style Stuff
And to you, dear reader, Happy Christmas!
